The North American Budenny Horse Society

The North American Budenny Horse Society was founded in 2008. Our Mission is to create an informed community of Budenny horse enthusiasts for the promotion of the Russian Cavalry Horse in North America.
Outside of native Russia, the Budenny can be found in several European countries, but very few exist in North America because of its relatively recent introduction in the 1990's. Bred to be the ultimate cavalry charger for Russian officers, this intelligent and hardy breed has transitioned well into various sport disciplines, most notably show-jumping and steeple-chase. Known as an extreme breed of Russia, it has the unique physical distinction of being able to recover from heavy exercise more rapidly than an average horse, a quality that was integral to its success as an army mount. This same quality of endurance is shared by Arabian horses.
As of January 2011, there are a total of 34 known Budennies in North America, and only two dedicated stud farms. The North American Budenny Horse Society is an informal organization for the purpose of promoting the Budenny horse and offering an educational resource on the breed. Information concerning the breed's history has been validated by VNIIK, The All-Russian Scientific Research Institute for Horse Breeding, the official registry for the Budenny horse in Russia. The North American Budenny Horse Society advocates proper breeding practices for the benefit of the breed's future in North America and internationally.

December 1, 2011: The North American Budenny Horse Society was given a Horse Website Award for "excellence in the world of horses" from HorseBreedsInfo.com!! We heartily thank them for the recognition.

Check out our registry-approved section on the Budenny Horse near the beginning of the book, with glossy full-color photographs of some of our members' beautiful horses!

January, 2011: The North American Budenny Horse Society is proud to announce its involvement in an upcoming book, Great Horse Breeds of the World by Whitehall Publishing.
Several of our member's horses are featured in full-color photos and on the cover of the book. Breed information was checked by VNIIK before submission, guaranteeing accurate information.
Look for the book in stores Spring of 2011! Information on where it can be purchased will be added closer to print date.
November, 2010: Thank you to Lesley Rogers from Tbilisi, Georgia for sending us pictures of her Budenny, Azimut. Azimut is a 17 hand gelding that was imported from Rostov, Russia a few years before she bought him. She writes: "He's a super horse: intelligent, human-oriented, willing, and sensitive. He had been mishandled so he was spooky in the beginning but he has learned to trust me and those fears have mostly disappeared. I've only had him since August but already we have a special bond of friendship."
